Walking on the path of relaxation

Meditation is a great way to relax. But it’s not always easy to find the time and the right place to step back and relax. And, not everybody feels comfortable with sitting still for a certain length of time.

If this is your case, you should try walking meditation – a meditation in action is as effective as a classical meditation, but can be integrated more easily in your everyday routines and your vibrant lifestyle. Whether going to work or taking a walk in the park during lunchtime – try to experience everything more consciously, increase your awareness and take everything in.

How to practice walking meditations? 

Walk – Breathe – Smile

Just 5 minutes of attentive walking are enough (walk longer if you want). The best place for walking meditations is outdoors. Walk barefoot where possible, as it connects you with nature and grounds you more.

Walk at a slow to normal pace. Be mindful and aware of your walking and breathing. Be present with every step – pay attention to the physical experience of walking and to the sensations in your body: how does it feel when you roll your feet from heel to toe, when you lift your feet up to move them forward? Then observe the sensations that arise in the other parts of the body while walking – from ankle to head. “Scan” your body mentally, and if you feel any blockage, breathe into this part of your body. When your awareness gets distracted, bring it back to your walking experience.

Last but not least – smile. Smiling is not only the most beautiful accessory you can wear, it also releases endorphins, messengers signalling happiness to your brain, making your walking meditation an even happier experience.
